Peter Eckstein Kovacs, a presidential adviser on national minorities, Tuesday said that the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) would agree to an unicameral Parliament, “if a system were found to ensure proportional representation”. UDMR therefore might no longer oppose an unicameral Parliament proposal with one condition: for the Magyar minority to have access to the Legislative Body. ‘The conditions have not expressively been laid out to ruling coalition partners. What the UDMR is interested in is for the Magyar minority to be represented in parliamentary structures, whether one or two Houses, commensurate with their number and importance,” Peter Eckstein Kovacs said.
UDMR has so far been opposed to an unicameral Parliament made possible by a relevant constitutional amendment.
