Athletics: Three gold medals for Romania at U23 EC

Romanian athletes have competed brilliantly at the European U23 Athletics Championships in Ostrava this weekend.

Bianca Perie (photo) won the hammer throw event on Saturday. Her 71.59-meter throw was a new record for the competition. Also on Saturday, Esthera Petre won the high jump event (198-centimeter jump). The day before, Romania’s Andreea Ograzeanu won the 100-meter race and Cristina Toma won the bronze medal in the triple jump event (13.92-meter jump).

Esthera Petre, enrolled at the Olimpia sports club in Bucharest and coached by Kemal Guner, won the high jump event with the best result of her career – a 198-centimeter jump. The jump also set a new record, toppling a similar record set by Svetlana Lapina 12 years ago. She was followed by Ukraine’s Oksana Okuneva (194 centimeters) and Turkey’s Burcu Ayhan (194 centimeters). Esthera Petre (who has 2 more years to compete for the U23 team), has proven real qualities, setting the winning result on her third try. Esthera had a brilliant day, remaining the only competitor in the race at 198 centimeters and trying three times to go for the 200-centimeter mark.

In the 200-meter race Andreea Ograzeanu paid tribute to the 6 races she took part in before, in just two days’ time, and finished on a disappointing 7th place. Ukraine’s Daria Pijankova won the race, followed by Poland’s Anna Kielbasinska and Sweden’t Moa Hjelmer.
