Number of MAI employees charged with corruption tripled since first-half of 2010

According to a report by the General Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) published late last week, the number of employees of the Ministry of Administration and Interior (MAI) charged with corruption rose 81 pc in the first half of 2011 against the year-earlier period, while that of MAI staff charged with corruption tripled. During the interval examined, 1,199 criminal files (+27 pc) were submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office, compared to the similar period of time a year ago. A number of 289 files reached the DNA, and 910, the central and local structures of the Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Cassation and Justice <Romania’s Supreme Court>. Also, criminal proceedings were opened in 230 files (+11 pc), of which 46 at the DNA, and 184 with other Public Ministry structures. The number of persons charged was up 200 pc, up three times with respect to the MAI staff charged with felonies that fall under the DGA competency. During the period examined, the courts passed 80 first rulings and 54 definitive verdicts.
