Vladimir Tismaneanu, decorated by president Basescu

President Traian Basescu awarded the National Order “For Merit” in the rank of Knight to Vladimir Tismaneanu, on the occasion of his 60th birthday and as a mark of appreciation for his efforts in the promotion of democracy in Romania.

According to the decree, the distinction was awarded at the proposal of the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) president, Horia Roman Patapievici. In 2006, Vladimir Tismaneanu was appointed chairman of the Presidential Commission for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania and, on April 11, 2007, chairman of the Presidential Advisory Commission for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania. This commission drafted the report for the condemnation of communism, read out by Traian Basescu before the Parliament assembly on December 18, 2006.
