Tonitza’s “Afizé” sold for record figure of EUR 160,000

A new author record for Nicolae Tonitza was set, on Sunday evening, when his work “Afizé” was sold for EUR 160,000, during Artmark’s “Orientalism” Auction, according to results posted on the auction house’s website. The highlight of this edition of the “Orientalism” Auction, the work “Afizé” was estimated between EUR 90,000 and 160,000. Tonitza’s preceding record was set in June, during Artmark’s Summer Auction, by the work “On the Porch”, going for EUR 155,000. Tonitza claims, at present, with “Afizé”, the tenth place in the ranking of the most expensive art works sold in Romania. The painting “Afizé” (oil on cardboard, 50 per 41.5 cm), a sensual portrait depicting a Turkish woman, is one of the most emblematic works that Nicolae Tonitza painted in 1938, the last year of his life.
