Ex-President Iliescu launches book

Ion Iliescu will launch a book in which he claims he has gathered texts that represent him, including a call for the removal of the dictatorship, a call he came up with in 1989 with the intention for it to be broadcast on Radio Free Europe, a call that nevertheless did not make it to the destination. The book, titled “Fragments of life and history,” will be launched on Friday at 11 AM at Casa Titulescu. In the book’s preface, a preface he posted on his blog, Ion Iliescu points out that this is not a book of memoirs in the classical meaning of the word. The former Head of State reminds the readers that he is a left-wing man and does not deny or renege his past, that he was not interested in power for power’s sake in 1989 and that instead he assumed a responsibility back then. At the same time, the former President opines that “if Romania is where it is now then this can also be explained through the political leaders’ refusal to reach a consensus on fundamental issues.”
