The Health Ministry yesterday announced that the first case of infection with the West Nile virus was confirmed in the Galati County. According to Geza Molnar, counselor of the Health Minister, the patient – a woman aged 37 – is now in hospital, in good condition. “There is no vital risk.
The system that monitors the West Nile virus has been activated last month and this is the first case of this season,” Molnar said, quoted by Mediafax. According to the same source, Romania has “a population of infectious mosquitoes” that spread this disease, which is not transmitted by human contact. Geza Molnar insisted on reassuring the population that it is just an isolated case and there is no risk of an outbreak.
