Romania’s Simona Halep (photo), top seed of the BCR Ladies Open tournament that is taking place at the Herastrau Tennis Academy in Bucharest, has qualified for the semifinals of the tournament after beating on Thursday another Romanian player, Alexandra Cadantu, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Irina Camelia Begu, also a Romanian player, qualified for the semifinals following the victory against Italian Maria Elena Camerin, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
Previously Halep defeated Slovakia’s Lenka Jurikova in the last-16 stage, score 6-1, 7-6 (7/5), realitatea.net informs.
Sorana Carstea and Irina Camelia Begu defeated two other Romanians in the last-16 stage. Carstea (top seed 3) defeated Madalina Gojnea, score 6-1, 6-3, while Begu (top seed 2) defeated Cristina Mitu, score 6-1, 6-1.
Irina Begu and Elena Bogdan form the only Romanian pair still in the doubles event. The two defeated France’s Laura Thorpe and Slovenia’s Masa Zec-Peskiric to qualify in the semifinals, score 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. The Romanian pair (top seed 3) will next play against Slovenia’s Andreja Klepac and Czech Republic’s Renata Voracova (top seed pair). The latter defeated Simona Halep and Laura Pous-Tio in the quarterfinals, score 6-1, 7-5.
Italy’s Maria Elena Camerin and Turkey’s Ipek Senoglu defeated Romania’s Ioana Raluca Olaru and Japan’s Erika Sema in the quarterfinals, score 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
The tournament will award a total of USD100.000 in prize money.
