Only a couple of days after winning the European title in Sheffield, the Romanian fencers Ana-Maria Branza, Simona Alexandru and Anca Maroiu reported another triumph, on Sunday night, in the team competition of the fifth edition of the Military World Games in Rio, at the score of 45-31, against Poland, Agerpres reports. The students of coach Cornel Milan, representing the “Steaua Bucuresti” club, had defeated, in turn, the Swedish (last sixteen, 45-11), Chinese (quarter-finals, 45-35) and Venezuelan teams (semi-finals, 45-18). The team leader, Ana-Maria Branza, stated, in a release remitted to Agerpres: “I told the girls, people expects us to be exhausted after the European Championship and no longer be a threat, after having carried home the medal. However, we’ll take them by surprise. We’ll get some rest in the plane, exercise in the airport, compete, defeat everyone, get the gold medal and come back home. And that’s what we did.” The Military World Games is the second largest international competition, after the Olympics. Athletes from 96 countries competed, in 20 sports and 36 sport disciplines, in this year’s edition of the Games, taking place between July 16 and 24, in Rio. Romania came in 33rd in the Rio Games’ ranking per medals, with one gold medal and two bronze, both won in the judo competition, by Alina Dumitru (the 48 kg category) and Andreea Chitu (the 52 kg category).
