One-year countdown to London 2012 Olympic Games – the event, celebrated in Ferentari neighborhood, was attended by UK Ambassador Martin Harris (R), musician Damian Draghici, sportspeople Marian Simion (L) Violeta Beclea and Svetlana Dragusin (C) and other athletes.

The British Embassy in Bucharest and the Policy Center for Roma and Minorities, with support from the Bucharest District 5 hall yesterday celebrated the one-year countdown to the official opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games, with a special event dedicated to sports and culture in Ferentari neighbourhood.

The event was attended by UK Ambassador Martin Harris, musician Damian Draghici, sportspeople Marian Simion, Violeta Beclea and Svetlana Dragusin and other athletes, according to daily ‘Adevarul’ online. Within the event, Harris, Draghici and Simion played football with children at the Club for Alternative Education. Moreover, children at the club also staged a theatre performance, an adaptation of one of Anton Pann’s works.

Harris explained that the main message the Ferentari event aimed at sending out was that “sports is everything”.

In preparation of the event, Harris commented, according to the UK Embassy’s website, “London 2012 aims to reach out to the young hearts across the world and connect everybody to the energy of the Games, so that people feel the drive to lead an active life. Sports for all, the motto of next year’s Olympic Games in the UK, is brought to life in London as well as here, in one of the more poverty-stricken neighbourhoods of Bucharest.”

District 5 Mayor Marian Vanghelie did not attend the event, although he was expected to, ‘Adevarul’ said.
