MAI, RAR staffs arrested in luxury cars matriculation case file

Under the Bucharest Tribunal ruling, two workers with the Ministry of Administration and Interior (MAI) and two more from the Romanian Motor Vehicle Registration Authority ((RAR) are among the 20 people under preventive arrest in the luxury cars registration case file. According to investigators, the accused fraudulently brought into Romania 15 motor vehicles of the following brands: Audi, Mazda, BMW, Chrysler, Citroen, Opel, Volkswagen, Skoda, Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeo, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Dacia either stolen or rented from abroad, with no intention to be returned. They were aimed for sale to well-intended buyers with towards undue proceeds obtained from those transactions.

The cars were rented from specialized companies abroad and introduced in Romania before the rental period expired, with documents forged in Romania towards consequent matriculations. Once the documents were forged, they were registered, with complicity from RAR staff, and then sold through middlemen.

The damage has so far exceeded EUR 200,000. The General Anti-Corruption Directorate says it received assistance from the US Secret Service to identify how the criminal activity was financed.
