Romanians to operate sophisticated surveillance system in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the US Embassy to Romania have announced that, beginning this months, a team of Romanian military with the General Intelligence Department will be deployed to Afghanistan to operate the Persistent Ground Surveillance System – PGSS), a sophisticated surveillance system, Hotnews reports. According to the sources quoted, “this mission is carried out on the basis of a partnership with the US Army, which agreed for Romanian troops to take care, for the first time, of the specialized training for operating PGSS systems and to use these US Army equipments in the theatre of operations in Afghanistan.” According to the same sources, PGSS systems being introduced in the theatre of operations in Afghanistan has contributed to increasing the information gathering capacity and allowed a clearer picture of the situation in surveilled areas, with the goal of protecting allied forces.
