RON 180 M-fines for irregularities in road rehabilitation contracts

The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT) dealt fines amounting to nearly RON 180 M for irregularities found following checks in about one third of the 124 contracts analyzed, on Axis 2, concerned with the rehabilitation of county roads, the Tourism Minister Elena Udrea stated, on Thursday, in a press conference, Mediafax reports. The European Commission (EC) suspended in June funding for Axis 2 projects, after irregularities were found in the running of four contracts, and called on Romania to check all the contracts falling under this axis. Moving on to another topic, MDRT applied to the Finance Ministry for a loan of up to RON 980 M to be able to reimburse the sums requested by the beneficiaries of EU funded-projected, for the time the funds from the EC are on hold. At the same time, MDRT intends to hike, according to a bill for ordinance, five times the fines applicable to building-owners and mayors who fail to abide by their obligations regarding the surveying and consolidation of high quake risk-buildings, with the modified fines ranging between RON 2,500 and 75,000.
