Opposition, accused of defrauding 63 pc of social benefits

The minister of Labour, Family and Social Protection, Sebastian Lazaroiu said in a press conference yesterday that over 63 pc of the fraudulent social benefits were granted by the mayors of the Social Liberal Union (USL), reports. Authorities checked more than 3,900 cases of additional benefits granted to families. Out of these, 1,170 cases were found to be fraudulent. When data were centralised, it was found that, of the almost 1,200 cases of fraudulent benefits, 32 pc were granted by local PSD authorities, 26 pc by PNL, 5 pc by PC and 28 pc by PDL. The ministry also checked how heating benefits were granted: 400,000 out of more than one million files. Here, too, municipalities controlled by USL hold the first place. The Labour minister said that, when the Parliament will return on session this autumn, he will submit a draft law that will radically change Romania’s welfare system, because “the current structure and legislation in this field led to the development of a legal system of electoral bribe.” The total sum that was defrauded accounts for 15 pc of the money spent on social assistance in Romania (RON 14 bln), i.e. RON 2 bln. “I appeal to all political parties, especially those that deplore the situation of the poor, to stop defrauding the state budget,” Lazaroiu stated.
