UNPR ‘recruits’ four more mayors

Three mayors from Salaj County, two of which were members of the Social-Democrat Party, and one mayor from Gorj County have officially announced their intention to run in next year’s elections on behalf of the National Union for Romania Progress (UNPR).

In a press release quoted by Mediafax news agency, the party said the four mayors believe UNPR to be “the only party offering a guarantee of seriousness, competence and responsibility.”

“Moreover, they strongly believe in the projects promoted by UNPR, which they deem, very important to Romania and Romanians,” the release also said.

UNPR is a party recently created by a wide group of independent MPs, most of them defectors from the ranks of the opposition Social-Democrats and Liberals. UNPR is also a member of the ruling coalition, backing the current government in Parliament and having the defence minister position in the current cabinet. In recent weeks, several opposition officials have decided to join the UNPR.
