Ion Diaconescu turns 94

Ion Diaconescu, former leader of the Christian-Democratic National Peasants’ Party (PNTCD) and former Speaker of the Lower Chamber from 1996 to 2000, turned 94 last Thursday. Diaconescu (born on August 25, 1917, in Botesti, Arges County) is a Romanian politician. Diaconescu was a member of the National Peasant Party since 1936 until the communist authorities abolished it in 1947. After 1989, Diaconescu was part of PNTCD’s leadership, being elected MP from 1990 to 2000. Diaconescu was Speaker of the Lower Chamber from 1996 to 2000. During the communist regime he was a political prisoner for 17 years (1947-1964).
