Cabinet approves creation of Bucharest transport authority

The government in its Tuesday session approved the creation of the Bucharest Metropolitan Transport Authority, which will be subordinated to the Ministry of Transports, according to Mediafax. The authority will regulate and coordinate all public transit in the capital and Ilfov County and will operate on its own funds, but also on financing from the state budget and other sources.  The structure was designed based on a joint Transport Ministry-World Bank study in 2006, ministry State Secretary Alexandru Nazare explained. He said the authority will be led by a general manager named by the ministry and will have about 80 employees who will either be transferred from other public institutions or will be hired. The project to set up an authority in charge of all kinds of public transit was first announced by Transport Minister Anca Boagiu in March. Boagiu said at the time that the project would lead to “a balance between underground and above ground transit.”
