President Traian Basescu yesterday received Chief Rabbi Menachem Hacohen on a farewell visit to Cotroceni Palace, according to Mediafax. “It’s a real pleasure to meet you. (…) A rabbi is always in command,” Basescu told Hacohen. In his turn, the Chief Rabbi said he too was at sea, but that “it’s a lot more difficult to sail the sea of politics.” “As sailors, we have a better understanding of realities,” the president replied. The rest of the meeting was held behind closed doors. Hacohen was named Chief Rabbi of Jewish Communities in Romania in 1997. The official farewell ceremony, organised by the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, was also to be attended by Israel’s minister of industries, labour and commerce, Shalom Simchon, Mediafax said.
