Senate informed about US request to use Kogalniceanu airport for transit

President Traian Basescu informed the Senate about the fact that the Supreme Defence Council (CSAT) approved the US request to use the Mihail Kogalniceanu airport and the Constanta harbor as points of transit for soldiers and equipment to and from Iraq and Afghanistan, Mediafax informs. The announcement was made yesterday by Speaker of the Senate Mircea Geoana, who stated that “in line with the current legislation and taking into account that the Lower Chamber has been informed too, the procedure of informing Parliament has been completed.” President Traian Basescu announced in May that CSAT approved the US request to use the Mihail Kogalniceanu and the Constanta harbour as transit points for soldiers and equipment to and from Iraq and Afghanistan. Back then the Head of State said that Mihail Kogalniceanu and Constanta will become strategic infrastructure for the US too.

“Four US tanker airplanes and four C17 transport airplanes will be temporarily deployed on the Kogalniceanu airport, considering that one of the bases in the Mediterranean is in process of modernization,” the President said.
