Iliescu suggests Geoana should quit politics

Social-Democrat Party (PSD) honorary leader Ion Iliescu on Friday said that because of the “blunders” made by former party leader Mircea Geoana, PSD lost the 2004 and 2009 presidential elections, Mediafax reports. “We lost the elections in 2004 and 2009 ourselves, because of the blunders made by the same man, Geoana. In 2004, he wanted people to see that he was a candidate for the Prime Minister job and he made a public statement that we did not need PRM’s (e.n. Greater Romania Party) votes in the elections. So PRM voted for (President Traian Basescu),” Iliescu said. He added that those who are responsible for actions that can compromise the party’s interests should quit politics. “There are people who lose sense of reason in crucial moments for society and who thus compromise not their fate, but the country’s fate. Politics is like walking a tightrope. Those who do not have the necessary wisdom should quit and make room for others who can be more dedicated to the job,” Iliescu added. This is not the first time Iliescu has criticised Geoana for the party’s failure in the presidential elections. In 2005, the former head of state said Geoana acted like “a nincompoop” during the 2004 presidential campaign and that because of his actions and statements, PSD lost the race.
