Romanian athletes have won no less than six gold medals on day 1 of the European U-23 Weightlifting Championships that are taking place at the Rin Grand Hotel in Bucharest, an event attended by 400 athletes from 37 countries, Agerpres informs. Elena Ramona Andries won three gold medals in the 48-kg event, having lifted a total of 175 kg, and Florin Croitoru won three gold medals in the 56-kg event, having lifted a total of 270 kg. Dr. Tamas Ajan, President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Ma Wenguong, Secretary General of the IWF, and Antonio Urso, President of the European Weightlifting Federation, attended the opening of the competition that will take place on September 11-17.
