Key moment in Romanian-Italian ties: President Napolitano on official visit to Bucharest

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano arrives on an official visit to Romania today and he is scheduled to meet with his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu at Cotroceni Palace. Later, he will also have meetings at the Palace of Parliament with Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana and Chamber of Deputies’ Speaker Roberta Anastase. During the evening, the esteemed guest will attend an official dinner in his honour, hosted by President Basescu.

On the second day of his visit, on Friday, President Napolitano will meet with Prime Minister Emil Boc at the Victoria Palace, and will afterwards attend the Italian-Romanian Economic Forum. In the evening, he will meet with representatives of the Italian community in Romania at the National Art Museum in Bucharest.

President Napolitano is the fourth Italian head of state visiting Romania after 1990.

On the occasion, it must be mentioned that Italy is one of Romania’s strategic partners, with whom we have excellent relationships based on solid historical ties and on tight and diversified cooperation in various fields of interest.

Romanian-Italian ties are governed by the Consolidated Strategic Partnership signed by the two countries’ ministers of foreign affairs on January 9, 2008.

The presence of a numerous Romanian community in Italy and of a large Italian business community in Romania gives a very important social-economic dimension to these bilateral relations.
