Adrian Ungur (ATP 29) will open up on Friday Romania’s World Group play-off tie against Czech Republic in Bucharest, as the home nation attempts to break the Tomas Berydch-Radek Stepanek Davis Cup duopoly. Ungur will face No. 25 Stepanek, the official website of the competition informs daviscup.com informs.
Both Stepanek and No. 9 Berdych will have hopefully recovered from their right shoulder injuries which forced them to both withdraw from their matches at the US Open. Berdych takes on Victor Crivoi in the second rubber.
On Saturday the double Marius Copil / Horia Tecau (ROU) will face Jan Hajek / Lukas Rosol (CZE). The last games Adrian Ungur (ROU) v Tomas Berdych (CZE) and Victor Crivoi (ROU) v Radek Stepanek (CZE) are sheduled on Sunday.
The Czechs are competing in the play-offs for the first time in four years, having lost 3-2 to Kazakhstan in the first round in March. Stepanek had missed the tie, and Andrey Golubev and Mikhail Kukushkin had won the both final rubbers in four tight sets to seal the win for Kazakhstan.
Romania are contesting the play-offs for the second year in a row as they lost to Argentina 4-1 in March.
