Judges explain why they seized RON 4 M from ex minister

The Supreme Court yesterday justified its decision of seizing RON 4 M from the wealth of Dan Ioan Popescu, who was the minister of Industry, then of the Economy and Commerce in the PSD Cabinet of 2000-2004. Judges argue that Popescu and his wife spent money they obtained by illegal means. The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) admitted in July the appeal made by the general prosecutor of Romania on how Dan Ioan Popescu acquired his wealth. The court ruled that the sum of RON 2.62 M, allegedly received from a cession contract involving shares in a commercial company, cannot be proven as obtained in reality. In retort, Popescu said that the decision to seize the money is aberrant, warning that he will continue the lawsuit “in the country and abroad.”
