Paleologu sees ruling party as still attractive by itself

PDL vice-president Theodor Paleologu said yesterday, referring to the possibility to create a center-right pole around PDL, that it would mean the recognition of the fact that PDL alone is no longer capable of attracting fresh people. “I do not think that we should resign ourselves regarding PDL’s attractiveness,” the former Culture Minister said, quoted by Mediafax. Despite information that surfaced in the media of late, about plans to create a new center-right movement, most likely under the name of ‘People’s Movement’ or a new political party a.k.a. the ‘Snow-White Party,’ Paleologu says that, so far, he heard no serious talk about a center-right pole, in the Permanent National Bureau (BPN) of PDL. “Snow-White? I’m all for the Little Red Hood,” the Democrat-Liberal ironically stated. Although he does not know what either name would mean in politics, the former minister still likes the ‘Little Red Hood’ better, because “she is smarter, nicer and more delicate.”

Building a center-right pole around PDL is however mentioned by an increasing number of PDL leaders in their formal statements. This is also the case of another vice-president, Teodor Baconschi – an outspoken supporter of the People’s Movement project. These days, he allegedly proposed the BPN of PDL a “project aimed at recovering the elites” in order to revamp the party’s image before next year’s elections, Realitatea.net reports, quoting sources at the top of the party.

More precisely, Baconschi wants the party to open its doors to the civil society and to right-wing active intellectuals, such as its current members Mihail Neamtu, Theodor Paleologu or Sever Voinescu. In other words, PDL needs “faces to show in the window” in order to improve its image, as well as brains that will bring extra value when it comes to right-wing programmes. According to the sources, Baconschi thus tries to reactivate the so-called “Basescu’s intellectuals” who took their distance from the president these years. One of the intellectuals targeted by Baconschi is Andrei Plesu, mentioned the sources, adding that the BPN of PDL already gave green light to recovering the elites and attracting the youth to the party.
