The European MPs of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) on Monday conveyed an open letter to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, asking him “to put an end to French authorities’ abusive and unfair gestures and messages against Romanian citizens”. “We urge you not to do harm, for harm’s sake, to a nation that supplies you, among others, doctors to your hospitals, and once in a while, genius men of culture in whom you take pride. This rhetoric and electoral exercise does more harm than good to Romanians and Romania, and the responsibility lies with you exclusively, under whose auspices this abuse takes place. (…) Delinquency, irrespective of who commits it, thrives on weak ground, namely where institutions don’t react promptly or efficiently. (…) What you do actually is a cowardice gesture that condemns you before both the Romanians and the French,” social-democrats wrote to the French president.
