Congress of travel journalists, held on public money

The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT) invested public funds worth about EUR 200,000 to organise the 53rd edition of the World Congress of Travel Journalists and Writers (FIJET). The money will cover the costs with accommodation and food for 200 journalists from abroad and 25 from Romania, and visits to the most important tourist objectives in Romania. Minister Elena Udrea claims on her blog that the congress “is a big chance for Romania to promote itself as a tourist destination.” ‘Jurnalul National’ newspaper has calculated that, at an average cost of EUR 50 per journalist, the ministry will pay EUR 80,000 for the accommodation of the 200 foreign guests. With catering and restaurant costs of EUR 15/day/person, the total sum allotted for food amounts to EUR 27,000. For Romanian journalists, the Ministry will allocate about EUR 10,000 in total.
