The European Commission (EC) plans to promote a new legislative proposal in order to renew the food aid programme for the poor, European Commissioner for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos stated for hotnews.ro. “I believe we can find a solution by the end of the year,” Ciolos pointed out. If the Commission’s legislative proposal is adopted by the Council of Ministers, sums as large as the ones earmarked until now will be allocated. Almost EUR 500 M was earmarked for this programme this year alone.
The option of eliminating this programme was raised recently. European Agriculture Ministers met in Brussels recently in order to decide the continuation of the programme in its current form. Six member states opposed the continuation of the programme, however the final decision was postponed for October.
