MPs – no immunity within 48 hours, former minister’s proposal reads

The deputy president of the Democrat Liberal Party (PDL) Monica Macovei proposes that MPs should be bereft of their immunity within 48 hours since the filing of a petition and without the Legislative consulting the body of evidence concerning the case. Macovei presented the proposal on her blog, adding this could be included in the 2011-2014 National Anti-Corruption Strategy, which is currently up for public debate. Macovei suggests that “the vote should be out in the open, so the public can see how their representatives vote and to prevent the concealing of responsibility behind the secret vote, as applied now.” At the same time, she argues the “decision concerning the lifting of immunity should be made without a study of the body of evidence concerning the case, as the Legislative is not entitled to pass judgment and, therefore, should not be entitled to weigh evidence, as it was up to now.”
