In an interview granted to “Romania Libera”, the chairman of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Staffan Nilsson explains why he thinks our country should have joined the Schengen Area this year. He voices his disagreement with the two countries – The Netherlands and Finland – which blocked Romania’s and Bulgaria’s Schengen accession. “You had been promised you would be accepted, you met the criteria and evaluations confirm this. Of course, there may be other reasons behind this refusal, but free circulation would have been an extremely important advantage. You will join the Schengen Area later, but I fully agree you should have been accepted now,” Nilsson stated in the aforementioned interview.
