Fullback Cristi Sapunaru risks jail in Portugal

Romanian fullback Cristian Sapunaru risks jail in Portugal! The Portuguese Public Ministry wants the Romanian charged with battery following an incident that took place in 2009 at the game that pitted Benfica against FC Porto (0-1). Back then, Sapunaru and Hulk were involved in a brawl on their way to the locker rooms, ‘Gazeta Sporturilor’ informs.

According to ‘Correio da Manha,’ four other players – Hulk, Helton, Rodriguez and Fucile – risk three years in jail. The Romanian player has two counts brought against him but the prosecutor’s office wants the sentence to be lower than five years because Sapunaru has no criminal record.

The Public Ministry claims that the players that attacked agents Ricardo Silva and Sandro Correia acted “in a deliberate manner, intending and succeeding to physically attack the two.” According to the Portuguese press, Sapunaru hit Sandro Correia in the head and stomach, and Hulk in stomach.

On December 22, 2009 the Portuguese Professional League’s Disciplinary Commission temporarily suspended Sapunaru and Hulk. The sanction was lowered by the members of the Portuguese Football Federation’s Justice Council on February 24, 2010. As a consequence, the players were suspended only four legs.

Porto bought Cristian Sapunaru from Rapid in 2008, for EUR 5 M. Porto asked for damages of EUR 17.5 M for the unjustifiably long suspension ruled against Sapunaru and Hulk.
