National Union for Romania Progress (UNPR) Senator Ioan Toma told Mediafax that the party’s leadership session on Tuesday approved his proposal to file an amendment to the Constitution so as to lower the voting age to 16.
Toma added that he will thus file the amendment on behalf of the UNPR the following days. The amendment will be filed with the special Parliament commission in charge of reviewing the Constitution. A similar proposal was made by Deputy Tudor Ciuhodaru, former Conservative and currently a member of UNPR. Democrat Liberal MEP Cristian Preda recently declared himself in favour of lowering the voting age from 18 to 16, saying that if teenagers can start working at 16, they should also be able to vote.
