While investigated by DNA, Iasi Medical School rector is running for new term

Although he is the object of an investigation of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) concerning allegations of a rigged auction for EU funded-contracts, the rector of the Iasi University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF), Vasile Astarastoae, announced he would be running for a new term as rector, as well as for the presidency of the Romanian College of Physicians, and would also make a comeback in politics. Astarastoae was awarded on Friday the title of honorary citizen of Iasi and, on this occasion, announced he had intended to step down from all his offices following the investigation, but subsequently changed his mind. “The mayor, the Local Council and the people of Iasi bestowed a mark of their respect to that which DNA spit upon,” Astarastoae argued.
