First verdict on confiscating unjustified wealth

The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) decided to confiscate USD 130,000, the unjustified part of the wealth of Dan Vele, the former manager of the housing administration company controlled by the Brasov Municipality. This is the first verdict of this kind, pronounced in a case initiated by the National Integrity Agency (ANI). The verdict is final.

On 20 March 2001, ANI filed a complaint with the Brasov Section of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) against Dan Vele, a former manager of SC RIAL SRL, for failure to submit wealth statements when he was appointed and relieved from position, and asked the DNA to start looking into his wealth.

The supreme court also ruled that the former manager must pay the RON equivalent of the confiscated sum, within six months from the date when the verdict was pronounced.
