National, foreign public figures decorated by King Mihai

The ex-prime minister Victor Ciorbea, tennis player Ilie Nastase, writer Mihail Sora and musician Ioan Piso are among the public figures in Romania, Europe and the United States who received distinctions from King Mihai yesterday at Bucharest’s Elisabeta Palace.

The ceremony was part of the series of events meant to mark the former sovereign’s 90th birthday. Victor Ciorbea was awarded a distinction for the “decisive gesture” he made in 1997, calling for the Royal Family’s return to Romania, and because “during troubled times, he dared to take significant steps towards democratising” Romanian society.
