Social Democrat MEP Catalin Ivan accused President Traian Basescu of lying when saying that Romania’s official EU fund absorption rate stands at 14.8 per cent. In a press release to Mediafax, Ivan underlined that European Commission data “are in blatant contradiction” of Basescu’s statements. The real fund absorption rate stands at around 3.5 per cent the MEP said. The Social Democrat also said this is not the first time the current rule intentionally gives higher absorption rates than they are in reality. This summer, “while the government was bragging with an absorption rate of over 10 per cent, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso sent a letter to (PM Emil) Boc saying that was concerned with the 3 per cent absorption level,” Ivan said. Basescu said last Monday that the official absorption rate, according to EU officials, stands at 14.8 per cent.
