Church orders and medals for President Basescu

President Traian Basescu received on Monday the Order of the Holy Apostle Mark from Theodore II, the Pope and Patriarch of the Great City of Alexandria and All Africa, and the Holy Apostle Andrew Medal from Daniel, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. While meeting the two high Church officials at the Presidential Palace, the Head of State reiterated that the Romanian Orthodox Church is enjoying “slight support from the state,” one that it nevertheless returns “tenfold” through its social activities consisting of support for the poor. During the meeting the President also stated that November 30, the day in which the Holy Apostle Andrew is celebrated, should be made a holiday. Thus, next year Romanians could have a new official holiday right before the National Day.
