White Christmas odds low in southern regions

According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), this year will see abundant snowfalls in Crisana, Maramures and Transylvania. Thus, temperatures will be normal in November and the chances of snowfalls will be high from mid-November. Higher precipitations are expected only in Banat and Crisana.

In December the monthly precipitation levels will be normal in eastern and south-eastern Romania, below the average multi-annual levels in parts of southern and south-western regions and above normal values in north-western and central regions. Banat, Oltenia and Bucharest may not see any snowfalls on Christmas and New Year’s Day, but in areas such as Crisana, Maramures and Transylvania the chances of snowfalls will be fairly high. Nights with extremely low temperatures will also be registered in December.

2012 will start with average temperatures below the average multi-annual monthly levels in most of the country. Transylvania and the country’s western regions will be under snow in the first month of 2012. Nights with extremely low temperatures will be registered in January too.
