‘Land of Smiles’ operetta to premiere at Timisoara Opera

The operetta show in three acts “The Land of Smiles” by Franz Lehar, on a libretto by Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Lohner, opens tonight starting 7pm on the stage of the Timisoara Opera. Opulence, elegant gowns, gold-and-sequin-embroidered shoes, cheongsams and dragon-painted-fans, a blue-feathered costume which evokes a bird of prey for the villain and tasselled slippers – these are some of the clues which allow us to glimpse, in the imaginary Land of Smiles, a representation of the China of luxurious silks and absolute power, sitting on a golden throne. Buddha’s statue, which sets the entire plot in motion, comes from a feng shui shop and was plated in gold, the organizers stated, quoted by Hotnews. Franz Lehar’s operetta was first presented in Vienna in 1923 under the title “The Yellow Jacket”. The show was subsequently performed in Berlin in 1929 under the title “The Land of Smiles”. (A.G.)
