MPs ask for repatriation of Brancusi’s relics

Thirty-one Romanian MPs from PDL, PSD, PNL and national minorities group have written to the French Parliament asking for the repatriation of the relics of sculptor Constantin Brancusi currently buried in the Paris Montparnasse cemetery. Democrat-Liberal Deputy Daniel Oajdea yesterday said the open letter was a symbolic gesture made in the hope that the sculptor’s last wish – to be entombed near his mother, in the Hobita cemetery – would be respected. ‘I think it is very important for every Romanian MP who can understand the importance of Brancusi’s work to contribute to the best of his/her powers to the repatriation of Brancusi. In the current political and social context where Romanians do not enjoy the respect of the French people I think a debate on the Brancusi topic would be beneficial for everybody,’ Mediafax quotes Oajdea as saying. The MP also called on the Foreign Affairs and Culture Ministries for support.
