The Democratic-Liberal Party (PDL) secretary-general Ioan Oltean stated on Friday in a press conference that the coalition was seeking solutions to have Mircea Geoana removed from the helm of the Senate and appoint a PDL representative in his stead, Mediafax reports. “The Senate is seeing an unprecedented bout of stalling of its activity and the push for this comes from the Speaker of the Senate, Mircea Geoana. I will not conceal from you that at this stage the coalition is seeking ways to initiate parliamentary procedures to have Mr. Geoana removed from office,” Oltean stated. His statements come just as an increasing number of Social Democratic Party (PSD) senators and prominent leaders have called on the party leaders to have Geoana replaced as Speaker of the Senate on the grounds that his actions are detrimental to the party image. However, the PSD leader Victor Ponta stated recently that, despite the disgruntlement that Geoana stirred in the party, he had no intention to have the latter replaced from the helm of the Senate as PSD would thus risk losing this office.
