USL ‘has dropped in the polls,’ Gusa says

Cozmin Gusa, a politician who over the years was a member of the Social-Democrat Party, of the Democrat Party and an adviser to President Traian Basescu, launched a tough attack on the opposition, in an interview to Realitatea.net affiliated Vox Publica platform. Formerly a secretary general of the Social-Democrats (PSD), Gusa insists that the opposition Social Liberal Union (USL) has dropped in the polls to below 50 per cent, according to two recent surveys. According to Gusa, PSD leader Victor Ponta is very afraid that the opposition could continue dropping in the polls and will thus lose next year’s elections.

Gusa added that Ponta has not been able to truly lead the PSD and instead of reforming the party, he chose to “make peace” with local barons. In Gusa’s opinion the “most toxic member of the party” is PSD Secretary General Liviu Dragnea, who also heads the Teleorman County Council. According to Gusa, Dragnea is involved in various corruption deeds and prosecutors will soon move against him, so the PSD secretary general should “take a step back” for the sake of the party.

“Ponta (…) is neither corrupt nor stupid, but he has a problem: he takes the shape of the vessel he’s in too quickly. He’s fluid. He took the shape of the vessel of the barons who brought him in power, forgetting that he was promoted in politics because he sent out a reform message,” Gusa added.

In separate comments for ‘Ziua de Cluj,’ Gusa said that in his opinion, Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu is involved in acts of corruption similar to those that Cluj Mayor Sorin Apostu was involved in. Gusa added that regardless of whether prosecutors will begin a criminal probe against Oprescu or not, the current mayor shall either not run for a second term in office or will lose the election.
