Chamber of Deputies ratifies missile shield deployment accord

The Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday ratified with 261 votes to 4, one abstention, the draft law that ratifies the agreement between Romania and the USA on deploying the American ballistic missile defense system in Romania. According to Bogdan Aurescu, state secretary with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement will consolidate the security of Romania and Europe, as the USA firmly commits itself to defending Romania through the antimissile system.” The agreement also provides an advanced mechanism of consultations between partners, which exonerates Romania from the damages caused by this shield outside its territory, Aurescu added. The specialised committees of the Lower House approved with unanimity the document, which creates the legal basis for deploying the missile defense system at Deveselu, PSD Deputy Florin Iordache announced. All parliamentary groups announced their support for the accord. The draft law will be sent to the Senate, which has the final say in this case.
