Aurescu: Deveselu base to open in 2015

The operations of arranging the military base of Deveselu are under way and the activity will intensify next year, allowing the construction of the main building to begin in 2013, Bogdan Aurescu, state secretary with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) announced. According to the source, the effective opening of the base is set for year 2015. “The first US troops have already arrived at Deveselu and activity is going on since the spring of this year, when we completed the process of choosing the location. The operations of getting the base prepared for the beginning of the construction are under way,” Aurescu said yesterday, quoted by Mediafax. On the other hand, the MAE official praised as very useful the debate in the specialised committees of the Parliament where he presented the accord, “because it demonstrated the unanimous political support granted by all the political forces of Romania to this project.” Also yesterday, the Defence and Foreign Policy committees of the Senate adopted with unanimity a favourable report that asks the plenum to ratify the Accord between Romania and USA on deploying elements of the anti-missile shield at Deveselu.
