US envoy in favour of extending anticorruption chief’s term

United States Ambassador to Romania Mark Gitenstein told Mediafax last week that it would be very good if the term of National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) chief Daniel Morar were extended. The ambassador was asked to comment on a press release from the US embassy praising the impressive achievements of Morar and Prosecutor General Laura Codruta Kovesi. Given that both Morar’s and Kovesi’s terms are soon going to end, the embassy called on the Romanian government to choose successors that would maintain the same high standards of integrity, independence and sense of responsibility.

Commenting on the matter, Gitenstein said he was concerned about the issue and wanted to make sure that the people who will replace the two officials will have the same results. Meanwhile, asked to comment on the US embassy’s stance, the Romanian Foreign Ministry’s communications director Doris Mircea said the aspects signaled by the diplomatic mission and by Gitenstein are already present in the “intense dialogue held between Romania and the US.”
