The first days of 2012 were replete with road accidents. According to the Romanian Police, 50 serious accidents took place in the last day of 2011 and the first two days of 2012, leaving 14 persons dead and 38 wounded. 90 drivers caught driving under influence had their driving licenses suspended and will be criminally prosecuted. Most accidents were caused by speeding, failure to adapt the vehicle’s speed to driving conditions, reckless driving and illegal overtaking.
The 17-year-old nephew of George Brailoiu, the Romanian millionaire who became known after buying Emil Cioran’s manuscripts, died on Monday evening in a car crash that took place on the road linking Lugoj to Caransebes. The vehicle the teenager was in was being driven by his aunt. The woman tried to overtake another vehicle but lost control of the steering wheel. The young man was killed on the spot and the woman was hospitalized.
24-year-old George Parteca, the son of a Constanta-based businessman, died on Monday in the Mamaia resort after the Porsche he was speeding in collided with a pole on the side of the road then overturned. Police officers established that the young man had a blood alcohol content of 1.7 grams per one thousand. The young man was the son of Stere Parteca, a businessman that owns the Select and Del Mar hotels in Mamaia.
A young motorcyclist lost his life on the Timisoara-Arad Highway, being hit by a driver that recklessly changed lanes.
A child is in a coma after the car he was in fell into a ravine in the Paltinis area. His parents suffered multiple fractures. The child is in a serious condition, having multiple skull fractures and severe cerebral concussions. The child was taken to the emergency hospital in Sibiu at first but doctors there decided to transfer him to Bucharest. Preparations for the trip lasted approximately 90 minutes because the child could not be disconnected from life support.
Also in Sibiu, a Polish citizen was seriously injured yesterday after the lorry he was in skidded and collided with a road parapet. The Polish man, who was riding alongside the driver, was thrown through the window and caught under one of the lorry’s wheels. He is hospitalized in a serious condition in Sibiu. Another serious crash took place in Braila. A 38-year-old Ukrainian tried to overtake a vehicle and frontally collided with another car. The driver of the second car died on the spot, while two Ukrainian women were seriously injured.
Also yesterday, a driver was seriously injured in a car crash that took place on the road towards Cernavoda. The man, a public television employee, fell asleep at the wheel for several seconds and entered the opposing lane where his car collided with a lorry.
