Ponta and Antonescu “may” embark on visit to US

The Social-Liberal Union (USL) leaders Victor Ponta and Crin Antonescu announced yesterday that they had included among their priorities for 2012 a political visit to the US and a visit to Brussels. “We may go to the United States for a political meeting. (…) For this half-year, our priority destinations are Denmark and The Netherlands, for 2012 the priorities are Brussels and probably a visit to the United States,” the Social Democrat Party (PSD) leader Victor Ponta stated yesterday. He added that next week he would be in Strasbourg, alongside Antonescu, for the election of the new president of the European Parliament, who is a member of the German Social-Democrat Party. Ex-PSD leader Mircea Geoana, the former Speaker of the Senate, visited the United States at the end of last year and was subsequently called to task by PSD representatives for allegedly presenting himself as the leader of the Romanian opposition during that visit.
