The painting “On the Beach under the Sunshade” by Gheorghe Petrascu, estimated at RON 400,000, will be put on auction on Tuesday by the Alis auction house, the Alis website informs.
“In 1921, Gh. Petrascu opened his seventh personal exhibition at the Romanian Athenaeum, at a time when his style had reached maturity and the majority of the critics embraced him as a deeply original artist. This work, dating from 1921, may very well have been first displayed on this occasion or two years later, in 1923, when his eight exhibition was organized, also at the Athenaeum, including in the presentation catalogue a painting titled ‘Women on the Beach’,” the presentation of the painting reads.
The Tuesday auction also tempts art-lovers with “The Portrait of Berthe Bovy”, by Theodor Pallady (estimated at a minimum RON 170,000). The Belgian actress Berthe Bovy (1887-1977), the daughter of poet and journalist Theophile Bovy and a student of the famous Sarah Bernhardt, appeared on the stage of the French Comedy in 1907. The portrait of the actress, who starred in several films and television programmes during a 60 years’ career, was painted most likely in 1925, after she married Ion Anton Ion Don, Theodor Pallady’s cousin.
Paintings by Ion Tuculescu, Ion Theodorescu Sion and Arthur Verona, drawings by Corneliu Baba, as well as the colour lithograph “La cantatrice chauve” by Eugene Ionesco are also on offer in Alis’s Tuesday auction, starting 7pm.
