Golden Age gifts, on auction

Athenee Palace Hilton hosts on January 26, from 7.30pm, two premiere auctions – “The Golden Age”, having as highlights some of the most exorbitant gifts received by the Ceausescu couple, and the Avant-garde and Expressionism Auction, a release by the Artmark house informs.

The highlights of the first auction will be some of the most eccentric gifts received by the Ceausescu couple from leaders of communist regimes in Asia and Africa. These include decorative art objects which belonged to Elena Ceausescu, such as a mother-of-pearl jewellery case and two natural fur items, one sewn up of six pieces of a tiger’s cub skin (210 cm, starting price: EUR 1,800), the second, a leopard skin (starting price: EUR 1,200), as well as useful objects, such as an Elite pen which belonged to Nicolae Ceausescu (starting price: EUR 2,000), a carpet depicting the dictator’s family, meant to decorate the House of the People (starting price: EUR 800), etc.

On the other hand, the Avant-garde and Expressionism Auction tempts collectors with a selection of art works signed by Nicolae Tonitza, Iosif Iser, Ion Tuculescu, Corneliu Baba, etc., on display in an exhibition meant to mark the National Day of Romanian Culture, running until Tuesday at the Romanian Athenaeum.
