The Eminescu landmark

At the end of 2010, the Parliament of Romania adopted the historic decision – of a great noblesse – of consecrating the January 15, the birthday of our national poet, the genial Mihai Eminescu, as the National Culture Day. The proposal came from the Romanian Academy, through its most authorised exponent, Eugen Simion. It is the most dignified reaction to the criminal denigration of Mihai Eminescu by “elitist” pygmies that want to build their political careers by demolishing the purest symbol of our spirituality. Since then, the Romanian Academy has decided to organise solemn scientific sessions each year, on January 15. Other commemorative events are hosted by the Romanian Athenaeum, the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the ‘Mihai Eminescu’ Memorial House of Ipotesti, at Chisinau and in other localities; these events emphasise Eminescu’s role in affirming our national identity in the context of European globalisation.

This year too, the commemoration of our National Poet gives us an occasion to enlighten ourselves by meditating on the most tragic and heroic Romanian destiny. Deep truths were – and still are – told, on every festive occasion, about the universality of its work, and we recollect terrible accounts describing his moral torments, more painful than the physical ailments that sapped his health. But Eminescu knew how to confront his destiny. Proof stands his promethean struggle against time, the fight he waged in his creation laboratory; his unequalled capacity of conceiving a world of eternal beauty; his belief in the future of our nation, through which he consecrated the Romanian Language. What a gigantic lesson of dignity and creation for the dark hours of today! What a contagious defiance of death and of all those wishing to impose their almightiness through the blackmail to unleash the elements around us! This is why, simply spelling the name of Eminescu, today has the value of the foremost symbol of our national resistance.

The symbol of national resistance through generalised creation thus negates the poisons methodically injected to Romania by the “elitist” pygmies that see as obsolete notions like fatherland and patriotism, national dignity and pride, free and democratic future of Romania. The entire political blackmail exerted today, which secures the continuity to governance by creating ethnic enclaves, like furuncles on the body of the country, all of these must take us even closer to Eminescu, make us even more aware of the inestimable value his life and work gave us. His work as an artist, but also publicist, is unjustly accused of being outdated.

This accusation is indeed unjust, because a creator like Eminescu, whose written work consecrated honesty, justice, patriotism, unbiased attitude also in global politics as supreme values, such a personality is representative for the highest ideals. He cannot be against the essence of Liberalism, democracy and liberty. He is against opportunism, mimicry, unassimilated influences like empty shapes, hence against falsehood, confusion and irresponsibility. A personality like Eminescu’s is a source of supreme freedom, a promoter of authentic rejuvenation, which bears and produces value. His poetic work – romantic by definition – is a synthesis of classical values and, even more, anticipates characteristics of the new esthetic currents. Similarly, his work as a publicist defines every authentic and sincere human belief. This is why we see Eminescu as our eternal exponent.

And also because of this, contemporary Romania’s generations have the duty of guarding this sacred heritage, and school – with all those serving it – must position itself at the helm of this movement. The resurrection of education is a must, because it is precisely in school that appeared – two decades ago – the first sign of the anti-Eminescu and antinational attitude, by removing from manuals the brilliant philosophic poem called ‘Emperor and Proletarian,’ and also by sacrificing the correlative ratio between information and formation.

Frequent sociological studies, whose alarming results were almost ignored by the public, prove that an increasing number of pre-teens and teenagers find their models of moral behavior and professional accomplishments elsewhere than in the present condition of their teachers and professors, or in artistic and scientific personalities. Unfortunately, they see ‘manele’ singers, TV stars or porn stars as examples of success in life. In a dignified and responsible society, with a high public conscience, such a state of mind among the youth should come as a shock, capable to mobilise the entire society into a mandatory resurrection.

Such a resurrection can begin precisely by using to a superior scale the work of Eminescu throughout the whole education system, because Eminescu is a symbol of our national symbols, even with respect to teaching lessons in school. By ignoring him, the new generations would ignore all our values, our very identity. The increasingly painful drama we live today, when Romania’s standing in the EU depends more and more of the young generations, obliges us to conceive a national long-term strategy in this field, with a modern curriculum, similar to the big efforts made by France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain a.s.o. These countries do not accept attacks against their supreme values, especially their existence as nations.

On the other hand, in our country, the educational components, especially those of patriotic and ethic-moral education are not only ignored, but also incriminated as totalitarian. This allowed the invasion of drugs, school abandonment, violence, crime etc. in school. Regaining the dignity of the education system represents an essential priority for Romania. And the work of Eminescu is the first supporting factor.

Eminescu remains immortal, same as the eternal rebirth of nature. We keep returning to him like in an age-old ritual of communion. Because Eminescu is our supreme landmark.
